What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cover that is placed over a tooth like a cover, to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. Dental crowns are placed mostly after a root canal treatment has taken place or if the fillings have worn out. They protect the treated tooth from developing deep bacteria or damage.
Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?
A dental crown is recommended by the dentist in the following cases:
- To provide protection for a weak tooth (in cases like gum disease, decay, etc) from breaking or to assist parts of a cracked tooth hold on together
- To restore a tooth that has been severely worn down or to restore an already broken tooth
- To cover and provide support to a tooth with large fillings
- After a root canal treatment
- To support a dental bridge
- To cover severely discolored teeth
- To cover a dental implant
- Any cosmetic modifications may also require dental crowns
Types of Dental Crowns
1. Temporary Crowns: These crowns are made of acrylic based materials or stainless steel and are made at the dental clinic itself. Where as, Permanent ones are made in dental laboratory. These are the ones that are used as temporary restoration placements by the dentist till the permanent dental crowns arrive from the dental lab. These ones allow you to eat food normally.
Tips to take care of temporary crowns:
- Avoid eating or chewing where the crown is placed.
- Avoid sticky and hard food as it would lead to cracking or pulling of the dental crown.
- Normal brushing and flossing is required around the tooth where the temporary crown is placed, so do not neglect this, also do not be harsh
- Do not miss any scheduled dental appointment, which is given for fixture of permanent crowns, as temporary crowns are usually placed for not more than 3 weeks.
2. Stainless Steel: These crowns protect the tooth from any further decay, or tooth cavity being spread. Stainless steel crowns are generally used for children’s teeth as they do not require frequent visits to the dental clinic and very much cost effective.
3. Metal crowns: These crowns include alloys that have high content of (platinum or nickel or metal alloys or gold). These dental crowns withstand any pressure or force while eating or biting and are more durable. They rarely break or crack. Metal crowns are a good option for out-of-sight molars, due to its metallic colour.
4. Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These are an option when you want to match the colour to the neighbouring tooth. These are a good choice for front or back teeth where the metal is required for strength. However, there is more wear and tear and sometimes chiping that occurs with this crown type compared to the other crowns.
5. All -resin: These are the most cost effective crowns but are also more prone to fractures and can tear down easily
6. All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain: Easily considered the best cosmetic choice, these dental crowns provide a natural color match that’s far better than any of the other materials, and they’re definitely more suitable for patients with any metal allergies.
Disadvantages of Dental crowns
- An allergic reaction can occur due to the mixture used to make the crowns.
- There is a possibility that the crown could fall due to decay or loosening of the cement which is used to place the crown.
- Discomfort and sensitivity can occur after the anesthesia wears off, the dentist will advise you to use a tooth sensitive toothbrush for this.
- Sometimes the cement can wash out from under the crown and loosen the crown. This will not only loosen the crown but will also cause tooth decay if the bacteria is allowed to leak in.
How are dental crowns placed?
The process is completed in mostly 2 seatings. During the first searing, decay or the tooth that needs treatment is cleaned and is sharpened, given a shape, so that the crown can be placed. During this seating a temporary crown is fixed.
During the second seating, the temporary crown is taken out and the permanent crown is adjusted and then cemented in place
