What is Sleep Apnea ?

Sleep apnea is a condition that makes difficult for your body to receive the oxygen you need to properly function and makes it impossible to breathe clearly while you are sleeping at night.  There are many problems that arise if you have not treated sleep Apnea. This includes stroke, high blood pressure, headache, diabetes, dry mouth, depression, heart failure, sore throat etc and overall your quality of life can be greatly be affected.

There are different types of Sleep Apnea

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common types of sleep apnea, it causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep and is a potentially serious sleep disorder. This type of apnea occurs when your throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.Another cause of OSA is having too much of fatty tissue in the back of your throat. An option to handle this is a mouthpiece, which can be used to thrust your lower jaw forward during sleep. In some cases, surgery may be an option too.
  • Central Sleep Apnea: Central sleep apnea occurs because the brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control the  breathing. This condition is different from obstructive sleep apnea, in which you can’t breathe normally because of upper airway obstruction. Central sleep apnea is less common than obstructive sleep apnea.

How can one treat sleep Apnea?

There are many ways by which sleep apnea can be managed.  At LV dental Square we recommend the following:

We often recommend patients to wear a removable oral appliance, as it is a convenient treatment This device is very secure and works the best.

How does this oral appliance work?

It is customized for your mouth specifically and securely. As a result of which you can simply slip it into place when you go to sleep. It remains in place inside the mouth and holds your lower jaw in the perfect position. This helps your tongue from falling backward and keeps the airway clear. Most of the people have benefited using this oral appliance.

  • CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. This has been proved to be the most successful sleep Apnea treatment method. It delivers a steady stream of air through a mask in order to keep your airways open during the night. This way the body receives the required oxygen for proper rest.
  • Surgery is the other treatment option available. The surgery can clear up sleep Apnea issues by removing the extra fatty tissue blocking your airway.
