What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery specializes in surgery of the face, jaw and mouth. It includes the diagnosis and treatment of any oral injuries, diseases and defects.

Need for an oral surgery

There are reasons why an oral surgical procedure would be required.

  • To maintain your oral health at times an oral surgery would be required, this is because many people avoid regular dental visits and are unaware of infections caused in the mouth. For example, if tooth decay is not treated in time, it would worsen the condition and this could lead to the removal of a tooth, and in some cases, it may also be necessary to perform oral surgery to correct gum disease which is called a Gum graft.
  • Oral surgery for removal of wisdom teeth would be required in case the growth of the wisdom tooth has impacted and caused discomfort. This surgery would be performed to prevent any further infections and stop your wisdom teeth from pushing other teeth ahead or forward.
  • Also, oral surgery is required for cosmetic reasons.

When is Oral surgery performed?

  • Dental Implants

These are tiny titanium abutment that are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the missing teeth. They act as tooth root substitute and the titanium bonds create a strong base for the artificial teeth. This procedure takes six to eight months to be completed.

  • Bone Grafting: Bone loss to the jaw is one of the most serious consequences of missing teeth. It begins as soon as a tooth is lost when the natural stimulation for bone growth created by the force of teeth chewing can no longer occur. Progressive bone loss can affect your mouth in a number of ways, such as a decrease in the gum tissue. It can also limit your choices for tooth replacement. Fortunately, excessive bone loss isn’t inevitable if you lose a tooth. Dentists can perform bone grafting procedures with materials that stimulate new bone growth at the missing tooth site. And, if placed immediately after a tooth extraction, grafting can prevent excessive bone loss and allow for future dental implants to be placed. The bone is taken from your own body – hip bone, jaw and knee or is taken from a tissue bank.
  • Orthognathic surgery: This oral surgery is required or used by the dentist when the upper and lower jaws do not meet correctly or the teeth do not fit accurately to the jaws. The misaligned jaw, as well as the teeth are straightened with orthognathic surgery. Before the surgery and procedure starts, the dentist will perform a complete examination of your mouth by taking X-rays. This oral surgery helps in improving facial appearance and also teeth function properly.
  • Facial Trauma: Injuries to face are caused due to various reasons such as accidents, sports injuries, etc. There can be a soft tissue injury or bone injury depending on the gravity of fall. These ones are treated with oral surgery by surgically placing the required equipment or relocating the part to its original place.
  • Oral Pathology: Our mouth is one of the important body members, so one should not ignore signs like reddish or whitish patches in the mouth, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, sore throat, etc, These some of the signs of oral cancer. Dental surgeons perform the required oral examination to perform the surgery at an early stage if detected during a check-up or examination.
  • Sleep Apnea: The treatment given initially is the use of a nasal machine that can deliver oxygen through the mask to limit obstruction at night. Surgical treatment includes performing the surgery at the back of the soft palate and throat. In more complicated cases, the bones of the jaw are repositioned to increase the size of the airway that is orthognathic surgery.

How to be ready for an oral surgery and precautions to be taken.

  • Possibly starting the night before surgery, one must avoid eating food.
  • Purchase ice packs and place them in the freezer to place it on your face to avoid swelling.
  • Medication ibuprofen will be required to be taken for a week to avoid swelling as ice pack can be just used for a day or two, make sure you consult your dentist before popping a pill.
